Kappa-bashi is the biggest shop-lined street that sells the cooking utensils for dining rooms and restaurants in Japan. This paper deals with the characteristics of the shop-lined street by the distribution and the scale of shops, the production and selling types of commodities and the formation of this shop-lined street. The findings in this study can be summarized as follows. 1. This shop-lined street measures about 950 meters in length and consists of 177 shops. They sell the goods of one or some kinds of tablewares, furnitures, pans and pots, mixers, refrigerators, ovens, boilers, wrapping papers, signboards and materials for foods and drinks. 2. Mainly these shops are of small scale in employees and the area of sales room. 3. Some of these goods are produced at large factories but most of goods are produced by a large number of small factories in various places containing the district around Asakusa. 4. About one forth of the shops not only sells the goods but produces many things such as pans, mixers, ovens, and display cases. 5. This district was in the part of the suburbs and one of the dumping ground in Tokyo in Meiji. Merchants repaired these wastes and sold them in this street. 6. This shop-lined street of cooking utensils was formed in Taisho and developed after World War II. 7. It was important factors on the formation of this street that there were many merchants and craftsmen came from Asakusa and other places and there were employers who had been employees and set up for themselves.
