Description
This paper examines the life of New Zealand born, Eric Stewart Bell, who devoted his life to Japan from his arrival in 1922 up until his death in 1964. Although stories and memories of Bell have been shared among many who knew or knew of him, his achievements and influence on Japanese society have not been widely discussed. His achievements extend across areas which include education, journalism, music and literature. Through them, he aimed to bring awareness and better cultural understanding primarily between Japan and New Zealand, but also between Japan and Australia and other western countries. This paper concludes that Eric Stewart Bell and his rich legacy should be considered when reflecting on past and future Japan-New Zealand relations.
