CuBiI4 has a band gap corresponding to the visible light and exhibits strong photoresponse, making it suitable for the use as absorber layers in solar cells and photodetectors. In this study, CuBiI4 thin films were prepared by a vacuum evaporation method and their physical properties were evaluated. Rapid heating of the source powders allowed us to produce single-phase CuBiI4 films with excellent crystallinity and crystallographic orientation. The single-phase films were highly insulating and only showed negligible photoresponse. By contrast, CuBiI4 films with a compositional gradient were found to exhibit clear photoresponse substantially stronger than those of the layers without a compositional gradient. These findings suggest that the compositional-gradient CuBiI4 is a promising candidate for absorber layers in solar cells and photodetectors.
