During the Wanli 万暦 period of the Ming 明 Dynasty, a book Shopcalled called “Rongyu Tang 容与堂” in Hangzhou published five traditional dramas : The Romance of the Western Chamber 西廂記, The Tale of the Lute 琵琶記, The Story of Hongfu 紅払記, The Tale of a Jade Box 玉合記, The Secluded Boudoir 幽閨記, and a vernacular novel The Story of Water Margin 水滸伝. All these six works contain Li Zhuowu 李卓吾’s comments.  Scholars have different views on whether the comments in the above six works come from Li Zhuowu himself. By analyzing the content which received the most frequently occurring short comment “Miao 妙 (wonderful)” in the above six works, I find that the “Miao” used in the five dramas is mainly used to evaluate the description of lovesickness and love between men and women. However, the critiqued content with the large number of “Miao” comments also contains other types of descriptions. In this regard, the description of “Miao” in The Story of Water Margin is different from that of the five operas. This situation is also seen in the content which received another common comment “Hua 画 (vivid)”. In addition, I notice that in some scenes, it is difficult to distinguish between the criteria applied for “Miao” and “Hua.” Given the contradictions in the comments, I believe that the comments in the above six works published by Rong Yutang were likely to be written by more than one person. It is difficult to distinguish between the use of “Miao” and “Hua” because the booksellers at that time added these comments to pander to Li Zhuowu’s views and enhance the elements of Li Zhuowu’s criticism.
