Abstract

Research Notes

In this article the author, who has been involved in digitizing rare books, outlines what rare books are, based on the knowledge he has acquired through his activities. First, the definition of a rare book is taken from a library & information science glossary and supplemented. Referring to the example of Japan’s National Diet Library, the criteria for designating books as rare are discussed, as is the handling of rare books in libraries. The second half of the article provides a brief explanation of Japanese old printed books and Western old printed books, including incunabula. Finally, the materials and formats of rare books – including the bindings typical of Japanese old books and the types of spine found in Western old books – are covered in the last part.
