Description
This article introduces a research project to study dialect which was conducted on Koshiki Island and employed Karuta cards as an inheritance activity. Among thousands of languages existing at the present time, half are in danger of disappearing. UNESCO reported that 6 languages of the Okinawan Islands are endangered. Koshiki Island located in the city of Satsumasendai in Kagoshima Prefecture faces similar problems. This article introduces not only the current language challenges faced by islanders but also suggests the idea of giving hope to elderly people by enlisting their help in teaching the local language to younger generations.
