Description

An absorptiometric method for the determination of the trace of manganese in the floating particles in the sea with leuco-malachite green was studied. The effect of pH, the amount of potassium periodate and leuco-malachite green, the standing period after the color development, temperature and effects of 15 foreign ions were examined. The recommended procedure was as follows: A floating particle sample which was collected from the sea water with millipore filter was dissolved in concentrated sulfuric acid and was evaporated to dryness on a hot plate by the addition of 30% hydrogen peroxide. The residure was dissolved in water, and silica was removed by filtration. The solution is diluted to 50 ml with water, and 5 ml of acetic acid and sodium acetate buffer solution (pH 4.1), 2 ml of 10% solution of hydroxylamine hydro・chloride, and 1 ml of 0.1% solution of bathophenanthroline in ethylalcohol were added to it. Fe(2)-B.P.T. complex was extracted into 10 ml of iso-amyl-alcohol, and 2 ml of concentrated sulfuric acid was added to iron free aqueous solution. After evaporation of extracted solution the residure was diluted with water, and 0.001 μg-at.of manganese standard, 20 ml of acetic acid and sodium acetate buffer solution (pH 4.1) and 5 ml of 0.2% potassium periodate solution were added to it and allowed it to stand for 15 minutes. After addition of 2 ml of 0.04% leuco-malachite green aceton solution and dilution to 100 ml with water, the absorbance at 610 mμwas measured against the reagent blank.
