Abstract

[ABSTRACT] Today English education in Japan is at a turning point. English classes officially started in the third grade in 2020 in the midst of COVID-19 pandemic. More children and their parents are seeking a variety of early English programs, and English immersion preschools are becoming a popular option. Bilingual education has been practiced all over the world where two or more languages are used in society, while an immersion program, one form of bilingual education, is relatively new, born in Canada in 1965. Over the years, a variety of bilingual programs have been tried, especially in the United States. This paper reviews the history and reality of bilingual education and immersion programs in North America and Japan and offers future prospects.
