Shigeo Okamura says, “If an old man brings up the issue of death as his own death to a social worker, the social worker must think about the issue with the man. The social worker would be inadequate as a professional if he or she could not provide consultation for the old man’s inquiry about his death.” This paper uses this concept as a clue to examine the meaning of death, what it means to assist someone to die, and whether it is possible to assist someone with their death.
