This paper deals quantitatively with effects of salient pole and damper windings on harmonic components in the characteristics of a synchronous motor supplied from a nonsinusoidal voltage source. The damper windings were found to be considerably affected by the harmonic components. This fact is useful in the structural design of the damper windings. As for the influence of the saliency on harmonic components, it can be neglected in practical application.
