Recent rapid progress of natural science and technology in the world enables people to enjoy comfortable and rich lives. At the same time, it raises various ethical issues in many fields such as global environmental preservation, information technology, engineering, medicine and so on. In such a social situation, universities in Japan have begun to add applied ethics to the curriculum. My university started teaching social ethics in 2010. This paper tries to present some of the ethical standpoints on which the applied ethics course is based. It is important to understand the historical currents of thought in traditional ethics. Applied ethics must be taught in consideration of such currents.
