Abstract

Purpose of this study was to describe the reaction of parents to the birth, and to their infant with a congenital malformation. This descriptive study was carried out on four groups: cleft lip and palate, hand and foot malformation, spina bifida, and trisomy2l. Data were collected via focus group interviews. Group members numbered from four to seven. Interviews were recorded on a tape recorder and decoded. Each group made a drawing of their reactions. Subjects had a positive reaction and attachment to their baby, while at the same time they were crushed with grief after birth. After a period of intense emotional upset, emotional instability followed for a year. Each group showed a unique emotional condition. 'Reorganization' was the start of living with their child constructively with feeling of worry and guilt.
