Abstract

It is a well-known fact that Japanese Literature in Nara period (8th century) and before that time was much influenced by Chinese literature. One influence is by Chinese thought, and the other is by the special wordings which was made when Chinese texts is changed into Japanese readings. In this paper I studied on the latter influence in the words of Manyō-shū. Among those poets who wrote Chinese poems, Chinese writings as well as poems in Manyō-shū, the influence of "the change of Japanese readings of Chinese texts" is obvious in poems of Otomo Tabito, Yamanoue Okura, Otomo Yakamochi, and Ikenushi. So it might be presumed that in 9th century, "the change of Japanese readings of Chinese texts" already presented one phase.
