説明

At Wako Primary School and Wako Tsurukawa Primary School, project-based peace studies on the theme of "Research on Okinawa" are conducted in the 6th grade of primary school. Primary school pupils engage in research on the "Battle of Okinawa," the only ground war experienced in Japan during the Pacific War, and the base problem in Okinawa where 70% of the U.S. military bases in Japan are located. There is a debate as to whether the purpose of these activities should be to "learn about the tragedy of war and rediscover the value of peace and life" or "to learn about Okinawa and how to live" in the sense of not merely learning knowledge. In this paper, we would like to identify issues in learning about Okinawa by examining the learning records of primary school pupils. We also explore the changes in learning when the witnesses are too old to hear their testimonies in person, and consider how to cope with those situations.
