Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to reveal the thoughts of young nurses regarding their struggles as nurses in their second to fourth year of nursing myotonic dystrophy(DM)patients in a muscular dystrophy ward. Furthermore, we aimed to use this information in the nursing of DM patients and to provide guidance for young nurses. The following five themes emerged out of this qualitative descriptive research: the challenges faced by DM patients and the importance of observation; the self-determination of patients with DM and difficulties associated with their care; sympathy and compassion in terminal care; the possibility of building relationships through long-term involvement with patients with DM; and facing challenges and the desire to grow as nurses. To address these difficulties faced by young nurses,it is necessary to develop an educational support system that includes assistance from experienced nurses and interaction with other young nurses assigned to muscular dystrophy wards at other facilities.
