Description

In the Energy Engineering Laboratory, several technologies for utilizing thermal energy and wind energy are studied. Among them, the study so far on the aerodynamic brake used for a small gyro-mill type vertical axis wind turbine is introduced. A gyro-mill-type vertical axis wind turbine rapidly increases its rotational speed as the wind speed increases. In general, when the rotational speed reaches a certain level, the rotation of the wind turbine is stopped for a while with a disc brake to prevent danger. However, by installing the aerodynamic brake introduced here on a wind turbine, it is possible to expand the high wind speed range in which power generation is possible. In the study introduced here, the effectiveness of this aerodynamic brake, the air resistance generated by the brake, and the wind speed-rotational speed characteristics of the wind turbine when the brake is used are clarified through wind tunnel experiments.
