Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine how internships in small and medium-sized enterprises are used to foster new employees as socialization support. First, we conducted an interview survey with 11 internship managers from small and medium-sized enterprises. As an analysis method, a modified grounded theory approach M-GTA (Kinoshita, 2003) was adopted. As a result of data analysis, it became clear that the internship staff introduced the internship to new employee education, positioned the internship students as "subordinates" and used them to train new employees. It was also found that internship students are being used as substitutes for new employees, reviewing new employee training, and reviewing the education system and recruitment of new graduates by collecting information about students directly from internship students. It can be said that the results of this research suggest that the internship is regarded as a "socialization agent" for new employees and that new findings are suggested for new internship efforts in SMEs.
