Description
A literature review was conducted focusing on the human senses and the museum experience, particularly the somatic senses, to identify research trends to date and to discuss future issues and possibilities. The senses covered in the literature review were tactile, auditory, olfactory, gustatory, somatosensory, proprioceptive, deep sensation, kinesthetic and multisensory. It was found that in recent years, exhibitions and research focusing on the multisensory system have been promoted as a reflection of the focus on only one sense. On the other hand, this survey did not find any articles that mention and clearly state that the somatosensory system differs from other sensory modalities in that its sensory receptors are distributed throughout the body. In addition, some articles were not collected in the keyword searches for somatic and proprioceptive, deep and motor senses, but were collected in other senses, which may have overlooked the presence of somatic sensations. It is hoped that further research on museum experiences, taking into account the characteristics of the somatic sensory modality, will lead to new findings.
