Description

The pine tree “Kyoyo no Matsu” was a symbolic large pine tree of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences in Mie University, but it was cut down in January 2021 due to pine dying. In this paper, we traced the tree’s history by independently analyzing the annual ring images acquired using the panoramic photography function of smartphones. As a result, the age was estimated to be 83-87 years old (planted in 1933-1937). There were two periods, 1955-1963 and 1982-1988, when the annual rings were narrow, and the growth condition was estimated to be poor. A photographic-based survey revealed that the pine tree stood in its location since 1971 and estimated that it was used as a part of a windbreak for the Kamihama Campus before the Liberal Arts buildings were constructed.
