Abstract

This paper examines the “westward transfer” and “northward transfer” of medieval samurai groups, which have been attracting attention in recent years, by examining the case of the Sasaki clan, a prominent medieval family. In the Kamakura period, samurai groups placed their clans in various parts of the Japanese archipelago and ruled through their networks, but after the period of the Northern and Southern Courts, they settled in one of them and aspired to control the region. Elucidation of this aspect is an important issue for research on medieval samurai groups. Therefore, in this paper, I will discuss how the Sasaki clan, which was originally based in Omi Province but developed in the eastern part of the country under the Kamakura Shogunate, returned to Omi. This is what I discussed.
