Abstract

Childbirth is a major life event for women and have a significant impact on their physical and mental health. Postpartum depression is a mental disorder unique to the postpartum period, and its incidence in Japan is reported to be approximately 10%. Given that a complexity of biological, psychological, and social factors are associated with postpartum depression, it can be inferred that the incidence, perspective, and interventions may differ according to culture and support systems. This study reviewed the literature on postpartum depression in Japan and other countries with the aim of organizing key issues relating to the direction of support and research. We conducted a narrative review, rather than a systematic or scoping review, to prevent category fallacy.
