Abstract

Given the recent increase in the number of Japanese permanent residents in Australia, language education for heritage learners of Japanese has attracted increasing interest in this country. This paper reports on the learning needs analysis of 11 heritage learners of Japanese at secondary and tertiary levels mainly based on their questionnaire data. The results show that the majority of the participants wished to particularly improve their reading and writing skills and to use Japanese in a professional capacity in the future. Moreover, they were keen to improve their Japanese skills in all language modalities, including honorific styles, to achieve an age-appropriate level as well as to use Japanese with confidence at home and in academic contexts. The paper also introduces how the new Japanese course for heritage learners at Monash University was developed based on these results and the course evaluation by the students who studied this course in 2010.
