Abstract
At the 97th Academic Meeting of Medical Society in University of Toyama, as a Professor Retirement Commemorative Lecture, based on my experience of being engaged in Japanese Oriental Medicine in the Showa, Heisei, and Reiwa periods, I gave a lecture on what is Japanese Oriental Medicine, history of establishment of Toyama Medical and Pharmaceutical University and Japanese Oriental Medicine Clinic, modern trends of Kampo medicine (changes in production value of Kampo preparations and trends surrounding Kampo medicine, evidence of Kampo medicine, Kampo medical education), the Department of Japanese Oriental Medicine (history, education, research), role of Kampo medicine in modern medicine and attentions (role of Kampo medicine, adverse effects of Kampo medicines). The late Showa was a period in which ethical Kampo formulations were approved and their prescriptions spread rapidly. In the Heisei period, evidence about Kampo medicines was gradually accumulated and Kampo medicine was introduced into medical education, on the other hand new adverse effects were recognized. Although nothing can be mentioned about the Reiwa period at this point, I hope that Kampo medicines will continue to be used appropriately as a valuable medical resource in Japan
