Abstract

This study aimed to identify favorable conditions and eff ective support for adults with selective mutism based on their positive experiences and the kinds of support they desire and to discuss the comprehensive support for them. We conducted a semi-structured interview with eight participants who had symptomatic selective mutism since childhood and analyzed the data using qualitative descriptive methods. Ten categories were identifi ed as favorable experiences, which included 1) finding a dependable other, 2) activities in psychologically safe circumstances, 3) fi nding motivating goals and inspiring roles, and 4) gaining confi dence through awareness of own abilities. The kinds of support they wanted were 1) development of public support systems, 2). increasing places and opportunities for self-actualization, and 3) public recognition and understanding of selective mutism. The results indicate the necessity of improving the social environment to help adults with selective mutism gain social recognition and understanding, feel safe and trusted, and have opportunities to deepen their self-understanding and gain selfconfi dence and motivation for self-actualization.
