Abstract

While interest in gender and sexual minorities has increased in recent years, empirical research on theirolder age is relatively limited compared to other stages of development. This paper specifically focuseson the identity development of gender and sexual minorities in older age. The aim of this research is toprevent mental health problems and to better understand clients' issues in psychological clinical practice.According to a scoping review of the international literature, it was observed that many studies were basedon a life course perspective that emphasizes the influence of sociocultural and historical contexts. Theresearch showed that older gender and sexual minorities tend to be more cautious about self-identificationand coming out of their identities than younger generations due to experiencing severe discrimination andprejudice during their adolescence. Future research could potentially expand the scope of the survey toencompass a more diverse range of participants, gain a more comprehensive understanding of thedevelopmental process not only of past recollections but also of older age itself, and conduct furtherresearch on the mental processes involved in the identity development process.
