Abstract

Objective: We aimed to report a training program that combines a mixed pediatric/adult ward and fieldwork training based on a case study of a child with medical care living in the community and discuss future issues in integrated training in the field of pediatric nursing in FY2023, considering the pediatric medical care and social situation in Japan. Methods: Practical training in the mixed ward included practice and observation of nursing care of hospitalized children and their families to learn about the environment and support necessary for children’s growth and development. Mixed ward management included an opportunity to observe ward management and a clinical lecture by a nursing manager to learn about leadership and membership. Fieldwork practice was conducted using paper-based case studies of children with medical care needs and their families so for nurses to understand the kind of assistance they need to provide when such children who have been hospitalized are discharged home. Results: The nursing students accomplished their training goals by performing a practical fieldwork training program using a mixed ward and a case study of a child receiving medical care to deepen their learning. Conclusion: The issues were to review the training program on the basis of the concerns that arose in proceeding with the fieldwork training, to verify the educational effects, and to develop a training program that combines mixed wards and fieldwork.
