Abstract

Objective: This study examined the items related to sexuality and gender in the textbook Introduction to Maternal Nursing and considered the status and issues of sexuality education in the nursing bachelor’s programs in Japan, which promote gender equality. Methods: We investigated items related to sexuality and gender in six Japanese textbooks on Introduction to Maternal Nursing that are available as of August 2023. Results: All textbooks analyzed explained items related to sexuality and gender as the basic concepts of maternal nursing. Domestic violence and sexual violence were explained as nursing practices targeting women, who are the main target of maternal nursing studies. Conclusions: Although students can expect to acquire some knowledge by learning about sexuality in the textbook Introduction to Maternal Nursing, depending on the content, there is a possibility that students’ understanding may be biased because of the characteristics of the field. Systematic education may be needed over a 4-year period from the perspective of developing the ability to view people holistically and practice nursing.
