Reproducing and Presenting Sanjōnishi Sanetaka Version of the Hyakunin Isshu Held by Seitoku University

Abstract

Seitoku University holds a Hyakunin Isshu manuscript, the text of which was putatively transcribed by Sanjonishi Sanetaka (1455–1537). The transcription was most likely performed by Sanetaka given that the manuscript comes with a certificate of authenticity (known as a kiwame-fuda) by Kohitsu (“connoisseur of calligraphy”) Ryō’on. A similarly early version of the Hyakunin Isshu is the Gyōkō version, which includes a shoshaokugaki (a note containing information about the transcription) specifying the date of the transcription as Bun’an 2 (1445). Another early version is the Hyakunin Isshu, an annotated version by the poet Sōgi. A number of other transcriptions of the Hyakunin Isshu were produced in the Kamakura period or Muromachi period. However, such transcriptions are few in number. Thus, the Sanetaka version is valuable because it is an early transcription and because it clearly specifies the scribe. This article presents scans of Sanetaka’s transcription of the Hyakunin Isshu and reproduces the text. It also compares the text with key versions of the Hyakunin Isshu and examines Sanetaka’s diary, titled Sanetaka Kōki, for insights into the circumstances behind the transcription. As a result, we estimated that the manuscript may have been copied on July 17, 1531（Kyo'roku 4 ）.
