Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the differences in fillers used by Vietnamese learners of Japanese, Thai learners of Japanese and Japanese native speakers, using International Corpus of Japanese as a Second Language (I-JAS). The study analyzed the data of 50 Vietnamese learners, 50 Thai learners and 50 native Japanese speakers drawn from the I-JAS in the following three points: (1) actual filler usage patterns of Vietnamese learners, Thai learners and native speakers, (2) relations between different proficiency level usage and the different type of task, (3) filler usage patterns of native speakers, focused on ee, eeto and anoo. The results revealed significant differences of performance between Vietnamese and Thai learners. Furthermore, the study found that the scores of J-CAT and SPOT are directly proportional to their filler usage. We also found different usage of fillers according to the type of task in the performance of native speakers, but not in the performances of these two groups.
