Description
All records of Mantis religiosa (Linnaeus, 1758) collected in Toyama Prefecture were reviewed. In this paper, it was shown that M. religiosa has been recorded at six localities in the prefecture and two records are from recent years. Most of the localities were on the flood plain and the beach, which are considered to be within the general habitat of this species. These habitat conditions are similar in the surrounding areas of Toyama Prefecture. Therefore, if the population declines in the habitats in Toyama, the probability of new individuals flowing into Toyama from the surrounding areas is low, and the extinction of the local population could easily occur. Under these circumstances, the flood plain of the Jôganji-gawa River, where the number of records is relatively higher than in other areas of the prefecture and where the species has been confirmed to inhabit even in recent years, can be considered an important habitat for this species in Toyama.
