説明

[Abstract] In recent years, there have been an increasing number of cases in which digital content using virtual/augmented reality (VR/AR) technology has been introduced as a new approach to the use of archaeological and historical sites. In this report, I summarise the basic information regarding VR/AR and previous examples in Japan. Thereafter, I examine the application of VR/AR to the Jomon shell mounds in Chiba City, based on an example of VR/AR implementation at the Pompeii site in Italy, which I visited last summer. The Kasori shell mound, which is representative of the Jomon shell mounds in Chiba City, is considered to be an AR exhibition that makes the most of the powerful outdoor facilities, while the shell mounds that have been slow to be maintained are considered to be restored to their former state using VR/AR to improve recognition and establish local branding. It is also confirmed that VR/AR should only be introduced after clarifying its purpose and impact and that efforts should be made to improve sustainability without placing a burden on archaeological sites.
