Description
In what scenarios might married couples encounter difficulty when communicatingwith each other? This paper focuses on couple counseling (which provides guidance on marital issues) and uses semi-structured interviews with counselors to clarify the process couples undergo to manage communication issues. Previous researches have indicated that married couples experience communication difficulty more prevalently as fixed gender division of labor has decreased and individualist cultures emphasize rationality rather than emotionality. Analyses results using the modified grounded theory approach (M-GTA) revealed that there are three primary patterns of "an inability to communicate" :noncommunication, "unsuccessful" communication, and unilateral communication. The common themes underlying these communication patterns are the differences in which marital partners perceive and regard their communication issues, depending on their experiences and customs, and their inability to recognize these differences, which result in estrangement from one another. In addition, there were also social structural issues, such as the sense of isolation felt by housewives who feel economically inferior and "new" fathers who are active in child-rearing, and the frustration felt by working mothers, in a situation where it is not possible to say that couples should do things in a certain way, as each couple has their own diverse circumstances. Also, ideal images of a couple may hinder communication, depending on the degree to which each partner's communication values differ from the other's, making it difficult for them to communicate on their own.
