Abstract

The auther investigated on the relation between the plan of farmhouses and the houseworks hold in them by hearing 33 old persons who live in Tango district (Kyoto Prof.), in order to demonstrate how and why honsework has changed during the first decades of this century. The results obstained, are as follows : 1) The space for housework on the floor tended to move from "hiroma" to "nando", while the plan of silkworm-rearing farmhouses changed from the type of 3 rooms including "hiroma" to the type of 4 rooms. 2) Such a tendency is related with the consciousness of giving importance to a reception space and it, by putting the workspace in the backside of the house, decreased the significance of housework as a means of communication.
