Description

This paper focuses on the current situation and new dynamics of Manchu's kinship organization since the establishment of the People's Republic of China through the case of Xiafangzi Village in Xinbin Manchu Autonomous County. Since the 1950s, Manchu's kinship organization has changed drastically because of a series of political reforms such as agrarian reform, the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution, and Reform and Opening. Typically, political and economic influences in the new social environment gradually estrange the relationship, and large ceremonies are rarely held. Based on the results of a survey, this paper shows the transformation and actuality of the Tu family's kinship organization. The paper highlights the importance of once again holding large ceremonies to honor the ancestors as well as continuously conserving and documenting lineage. As such, the relationship is strengthened and the family's ceremonies can continue, which can be considered an important part of ethnic culture. For Manchu's society, activities such as ancestor worship could add new functions and significance, which could provide possibilities to develop a kinship organization.
