Scholarly studies or criticism on Gothic literature are said to have substantially progressed since the 1970s, the decade right after new academic approaches such as structuralism and post-structuralism were adopted in the field of literary criticism. Many articles on the Gothic have been continuously and extensively published since then, the number of which was so large that almost all of the articles were collected, surveyed and rearranged by Frederick S. Frank's Guide to the Gothic: An Annotated Bibliography of Criticism (1984). The second volume of his book appeared in 1995, and the third in 2004, dealing with a greater and greater number of Gothic-related research articles. Needless to say, his laborious works are very useful for both scholars and beginners, but it is a bit regrettable that the space assigned to the books made his annotation of each study very limited. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to select some of the remarkable criticism of the Gothic since 2000, to provide additional commentary, and to show the academic trend in this genre.
