The Jigokudani formation, considered to be late Miocene to early Pliocene in age, developed in the Nara City and its environs is divided into five members in descending order as follows: (1) basal conglomerate, (2) Onigatsuji mud-and sandstone, (3) Yadahara gravel, (4) Sekibutsu tuff and (5) Nakanogawa sandy tuff. About 70 samples consisting of carbonaceous mudstone, grey shale and sandstone are collected from the Onigatsuji mud- and sandstone bed. Pollen analytical results of these samples are shown in the Table 2 and 3. They are characterized by the predominace of pollen grains of Carya-Liquidambar-Nyssa, and rare occurrence of Taxodiaceae-pollen. The presence of pollen grains of Caesalpinia, Albizzia and Hemitrapa (?) are new to Japanese Cenozoic formations.
