Description

What and how did Virginia Woolfachieve in the field of literature? is my theme of study through her diary edited by her husband Leonard Woolf. Of course it is limited to first five years of her activity, 1918-1922, but it was memorable time of her life, during which her attitude of writing was first established, and moreover if her "quick change theory (in her diary on August 16th, 1922)" were not workable, her future life as a writer can be anticipated moving along this line. It should be my study hereafter. She was ever in agony of suffering from the unsteady fear and consequently irritations resultant of it, which attracts our attention. At the bottom of this fear is existing not only that of spiritual world but also that of our daily substantial life. Daily life is our life in the main. She was with us in her life. I am inclined to think after reading her diary that, though ironically enough, this daily fear of life irritated her greatly, which made her write her novels for her daily dread and her novels tinted naturally with the fear common to us all. This is the modernity of her novels. But I must proceed with her diary after this to prove more deeply her fulfilment of general principle of value in literature.
