Abstract
This research clarifies characteristics of human resources development in the Japanese traditional culture professional, "Maiko" and "Nohgakushi". Maiko(geisha in training)in hanamachi(the Kyoto term for geisha district)areas within Kyoto are world-famous icons of Japanese culture. Both geiko and maiko are registration-based occupations valid only in hanamachi areas. As such, their career path is clearly defined. Their multiple and strong relationships are embedded in a communal network within the geisha districts of Kyoto. By receiving concentrated, tension-filled instruction from members of this multiple relational network, the individual can ultimately acquire the skills she needs in a short period of time. Their career path is clearly defined. Personnel training is by a system based on career development. They have to play special compositions at turning points in their career. Then they work in cooperation with other professionals to obtain opportunities to play those compositions. They are members of their developmental network. As a result, their skills and technique level become clear in their community. The characteristic of Nohgakushi human resource development is similar to that of Maiko.
