Description
The construction of world citizenship has emerged as a megatrend in the processes of modernization and globalization. Sociology for world citizens must provide basic viewpoints and knowledge for students who hope to build themselves as citizens of the world. This introductory essay aims to show the basic structure and main issues of sociology for world citizens through answering the following three questions:1)who are the citizens of the world? 2)what challenges are we facing in the process of becoming such citizens? 3)how should we respond to those problems at present and overcome possible future crises? First, I place citizens of the world as post-nations in the historical process of nation-building and globalization. Second, I classify problems into three types according to connections with modernization and examine points of those problems. Third, elaborating possibilities for solutions, I suggest dynamics of new social systems dealing with those crises as cooperation of and interpenetrations among the public sector, industry and business world, non-profit organizations, and citizens.
