The purpose of this paper is to analyze the structure and characteristics of school stories in Germany around 1900, and to examine how the crisis and anxiety of masculine bourgeois self-identity is represented in them. In this article we regard German school stories not only as stories of adolescent crisis, but also as an expression of the degeneration of the liberal educated middle class. We focus on Robert Musil's novel Confusions of Young Torle〓 (Die Verwirrungen des Zoglings Torle〓) (1906), which is set in a boarding school for children of the middle class social elite. What this novel describes bears some analogy with the baroquely complicated structure of the school building, an old mansion with many secret dens, hidden stairs, and doors. Teachers can control only in the sunlit classrooms, and don't know what students do in the dark, hidden places and bedrooms. Two of the senior class leaders, whom Musil called in 1937 "the dictator of the day in nucleo", rule in the dark, secret attic of the school. They undermine the moral assumptions of parents and teachers and cruelly dominate that teacherless world. My analysis attempts to show that what Musil's story prophesied was not just the inhumane orderliness of totalitarianism in the Third Reich, but its father- (or teacher-) less confusion.
