Description
The sentence-closing particle "da" of the Tokushima dialect (not the auxiliary verb "da" used to express a conclusion) was investigated. It was concluded that the basic function of this "da" is to tell the addressee that a matter has been decided. "Da" can be attached to an imperative sentence, a request sentence, a prohibition sentence, an invitation sentence, a question sentence (including cases where the latter part of a question is omitted), or to a declarative sentence. In each case, "da" can be attached to the end of a sentence which takes the form of an appeal to the addressee. When "da" is attached to a question sentence, the sentence changes from a simple question to one implying blame or irony. "Da" can also be added following other sentence-closing particles such as "ka", "na", "de", "wa", "ga" and "yo". Above all, the combination "wa+da" is frequently used. From a pragmatics point of view, "da" has various meanings : it can express familiarity, a strongly-felt wish, dependency, or dissatisfaction.
