A scale assessing social support, including appraisal support was developed for Japanese college students and the reliability and validity of the scale were investigated. Participants were Japanese college students（N =677）, who completed a questionnaire. Results of exploratory factor analysis indicated a three-factor model for the social support scale. One- and three-factor models of the scale were compared and tested using confirmatory factor analysis. The findings showed that the three-factor model had a better fit index than the one-factor model. Each of the three factors also showed acceptable internal consistency, as indicated by Cronbach’s alpha coefficient reliability. The validity of this scale was examined by correlation analysis. Overall, the findings indicated that the social support scale was reliable and valid, and appraisal support has a stronger correlation with mental health, compared to informational/instrumental support and emotional/companionship support.
