Abstract

An experiment was conducted to compare the Van Soest method to the ordinary method in analysis of roughage. Soiling oat and Italian ryegrass silages which had been ensiled at different stages of growth were used. The Van Soest method was superior to the ordinary method in estimation nutritional availability and nutritional changes of silages especially in the fiber fraction. Although significantly high correlations between the crude fiber and NFE and crude fiber and ADF were recognized in the previous experiment with the hay only two cases crude fiber and ADF in soiling oat and crude fiber and NFE in Italian ryegrass were significantly related in the present experiment with silages.
