Abstract

It was in 1826 when Friedrich August Frobel (1782-1852) published his main work The Education of Man. It was translated into Japanese in 1909. It was in 1840 when Frobel established "Kindergarten". In Japan the first national kindergarten was founded in 1876. This paper intends to make clear how the studies of Frobel's educational thought were done in the Meiji Era. The literature were classified into four groups. The literature published from 1867 to 1876 were contained within the first group. The literature published from 1877 to 1883, the second group. The literature published from 1884 to 1896, the third group. The literature published from 1897 to the end of the Meiji Era (1912), the fourth group. In each group the distinguishing charateristics can be found. At first, the system of kindergaten, that is, the practical side of Frobel's thought was accepted, and then his theory of educational thought was begun to be studied as education of kindergarten needed it. And it can be said that Frobel's thought was introduced as a thought in infant education.
