ドイツ観念論と音楽

What is the connection between Philosophy and Music? Philosophy is the study of reason, and Music is the art of sounds. Music is perceived by the sense of hearing, namely by the sense of humans. In traditional Western philosophy, it tends elevate rationalism and reason over the senses. Therefor Music had not been evaluated positively. However, in the nineteenth century, A. Schopenhauer, who was a German idealist, evaluated Music and suggested a profound relation between Philosophy and Music. Certainly I. Kant, who formulated German idealism, did not evaluate “Music” much, and yet Schopenhauer highly estimated “Music” as an “Objectification of Will” in The World as Will and Representation. A close study of the reason why he came to evaluate “Music” in spite of being a successor to Kantian Philosophy is necessary for our purpose.

After this, the connection between Philosophy and Music, especially I. Kant’s and A. Schopenhauer’s music theory, is examined.

哲学と音楽にはいかなるつながりがあるのか。哲学は、「理性」の学問であり、「音楽」は音による芸術である。音楽は、聴覚器官によって、つまり、人間の感性によって知覚される。西洋哲学の伝統においては、理性を感性よりも上級とみなす理性主義的傾向があったため、感性的な音楽について積極的な評価はなされてこなかった。ところが、19世紀になって、ドイツ観念論の哲学者の一人であるA.ショーペンハウアーは、音楽を積極的に評価し、哲学と音楽の間にきわめて深い連関を示唆した。確かに、ドイツ観念論を定めたI.カントはあまり音楽を評価しなかったが、それにもかかわらず、ショーペンハウアーは『意志と表象としての世界』の中で、音楽を意志の客観化として高く評価した。ここでは、彼がなぜ、カント哲学の継承者でありながら、音楽を評価するに至ったかを綿密に研究することが、本論の重要な目的である。

本論では、哲学と音楽について、特にI.カントとA.ショーペンハウアーの音楽論を考察する。
