説明

The field of political socialization research, created in the late 1950s in the United States with the cooperation of psychologists, political scientists, and sociologists, is a relatively young field of study having received its academic citizenship only recently. In the early 1960s, large numbers of studies were concentrated in this field, and there was a boom of sorts in political socialization research. In this paper, I shall note the historical factors accounting for the field's creation and discuss the basic ideological research assumptions evident in the early research, after which I shall critically review this early research in light of later results. Next I shall explicate specifically and in detail the impact of the family, the school, the mass media, and each of the other agents playing a conspicuous role in the political socialization of the child and shall note the problems confronting the field. Finally, I shall use the Sears model as a means of overcoming the academic research isolation facing this field and shall propose that, within our research on political behavior and attitudes, we need to take on the task of research on life-long changes in political attitudes.
