The purposes of this research are to re-examine so-called “Sandokuho” (three steps of reading) and to consider whether it is appropriate to position the “Sandokuho” as one of the important teaching steps of literature reading. With a special focus on the through-reading phase, reading instructions were reviewed from the two perspectives: one as the “first stage,” an introductory stage of a lesson unit; and the other as the “first-time reading” when a student meets the material for the first time. As a result of the review, the following five conditions were identified that are necessary for learning activities in the through reading: 1. students' excitement, that is unique to the first-time reading, is valued; 2. students are able to grasp the whole story; 3. students are able to display their reading ability at that point; 4. students are able to easily notice differences in reading from other students; and 5. students' motivation to want to read again is increased. Furthermore, regarding activities for the through-reading phase, as a replacement for the first-time reading impression comments, which have been widely used, a new activity, which reorganizes and uses log lines, etc., is proposed.
