Description

This study aims to first present an overall picture of Townhouse models collection in National Museum of Ethnology, Leiden and consider what they show as historical materials. Then, I will focus on Siebold, who left rich records from models to writings, and aims to clarify how he understood the early modern Japanese townhouse and how he brought it to Western Europe. When Siebold, Blomhoff and Fisscher who worked at the Nagasaki Dejima Dutch trading house, classified the townhouse models (17 models) created by the Japanese, they could be broadly divided into models showing streetscapes and models standing alone. The models were collected between 1817 and 1829. The Siebold collection of townhouse models were created as models of the townhouse inNagasaki. Siebold understood that the building size, appearance and interior designs differed depending on the trade, livelihood, and class level, and he tried to portray the features and landscapes of the Japanese streetscape.Looking at the detailed designs of early modern townhouses in Nagasaki that Siebold viewed, we see that size and formal representations differ depending on trade, livelihood, and class level. To comprehensively understand the Japanese modern townhouse, he applied a natural methodology approaching the overall image from its regional characteristics and details.
