During the Japanese Military Occupation of Singapore, there was an authoritative Japanese Language School at Queen Street in the city. The purpose of this school was to teach Japanese to non- Japanese young adults in Singapore. This article discusses how the nature of the Japanese language education conducted in the school changed and what its effects were. The findings are as follows. (1)In the early period run by the propaganda department (1942.5-11), Japanese manners and school discipline, which were adopted in primary schools, were emphasized. In the lessons, simple conversation was taught through English and Malay. (2)When the Military Administration ruled the school (1942.11-1944.2), the direct-method was encouraged and the "Construct Greater East Asia" ideology was clearly introduced in the textbooks, which spread over Malaya. (3)After the municipality took over the school (1944.2-1945), the graduates organized an alumni association. Some of the members say they acquired "the team spirit" and "the ability to organize" through the school and the alumni association.
