Description
The present paper deals with the flow of a viscoelastic fluid past a rectangular cylinder placed in the center of two parallel side-wall channel. The viscoelastic fiuid is modeled by Maxwcll's constitutive equation. The flow field around the rectangular cylinder is numerically solved by the finite differcnce rnethod. The effccts of several factors on the streamline pattern were discussed in the range of Re = 10~100,We =1.0, H/B = 2~4 and L/B = 1~3. For the Newtonianfluid,it was confirmed that rear rwin vortices of the cylinder increased with an incrcase of the Reynolds number (Re) and the cxpansion of streamlines in the vicinity of the cylinder was suppressed by the approach of the channel side-walls to the cylinder. Next,it was found in the viscoelastic fluid that front twin vortices of the cylinder were born and grew under a certain condition. This front vortex region seems to be due to the combined effect of the fluid elasticity (We) and the channel side-walls (H/B). Besides,it was shown that the geometry of rectangular cylinders (L/B) infiuenced on the flow field of the viscoelastic fluid in the casc of the longest cylinder (L/B = 3) and its effect weakened with an increasc of thc fiow inertia(Re).
